New Healthcare Website for New Mexico Residents

December 29, 2017 - Public Relations - Information

State Health Department launches new website with healthcare cost and quality data

Know what to expect before you walk through the doors. New Mexico Healthcare Compare displays the average cost to Medicaid of nine healthcare procedures at different facilities across the state. Facility quality measures such as patient recommendations and hospital safety measures are also available. The cost and overall quality of healthcare services can vary among facilities, and you may have a choice in where you receive your care. The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) launches a new website for New Mexico residents to compare Medicaid healthcare costs for nine medical procedures across the state.

The website provides healthcare cost estimates to Medicaid by facility/provider along with overall facility level quality measures. These measures include the number of eligible healthcare personnel who have received a flu vaccination and patient recommendations (on a scale of 0-10) of the facility. New Mexico joins only a handful of other states in making healthcare costs more transparent for its residents.

“Transparency around healthcare costs does not only serve an educational purpose,” said Department of Health Secretary Lynn Gallagher, “It empowers New Mexico residents to make more informed decisions about their healthcare options.”

In 2016, national health care spending amounted to $3.3 trillion and experts expect this amount to increase with each new year. Price transparency tools are essential to 1) help providers improve by benchmarking their performance against others; 2) encourage private insurers and public programs to reward quality and efficiency; and 3) help patients make informed choices about their care.

During the 2015 New Mexico legislative session, Senate Bill 323, an amendment to the Health Information System Act (NMSA 1978, §24-14A-1/11) sponsored by Senator Mark Moores, tasked the Department of Health with providing the public access to a user-friendly website on which healthcare cost and quality data would be available.

As of January 1st, 2018, only Medicaid cost data will be available on the website, but NMDOH is exploring funding options for incorporating data from commercial payers and Medicare.
