We offer cancer information and resources to the public and health care providers. The program's efforts are guided by the New Mexico Cancer Plan.

Cancer is New Mexico's second leading cause of death. One of every five deaths in New Mexico is caused by cancer. Cancer is also a major cause of illness and suffering. New Mexico cancer mortality rates have been going down for the past three decades. Also, progress has been made in prevention, early detection, treatment, quality of life and end-of-life care. But much remains to be done.

The Indicator-Based Information System (IBIS) provides access to New Mexico Department of Health publications, reports and datasets. In addition, high- quality surveillance data on cancer in New Mexico is collected by the New Mexico Tumor Registry.

The Comprehensive Cancer Program seeks to reduce cancer in New Mexico by:

  • Promoting healthy lifestyles to reduce cancer risk.
  • Promoting age-appropriate cancer screening tests.
  • Increasing access to high-quality cancer care.
  • Improving the quality of life for people diagnosed with cancer.
  • Supporting evidence-based activities and programs.
  • Measuring program outcomes and impact.
  • Fostering collaboration among cancer control organizations.

One of the Comprehensive Cancer Program's key projects is coordinating the New Mexico Cancer Council, a group of diverse public and private partners working together to attack cancer in New Mexico by using the New Mexico Cancer Plan. The Council works to increase access to information, prevention and treatment using innovative and effective programs and polices. The Council's goal is to reduce the human and economic burden of cancer and improve the outcomes and quality of life for New Mexicans.
