New Mexico Health Service Corps Stipend Applications Open
The New Mexico Department of Health announced today that the New Mexico Health Service Corps Stipend application process has opened up for medical and dental student applicants. In order to overcome shortages of physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners and physician assistants in our state, legislative funding from the Rural Primary Health Care Act is allocated each year to support the education of primary health care provider students.
“There is tremendous competition nationwide for health care providers so this year the annual stipend award amounts have been increased by $5,000 for most disciplines in order to keep up with the rising cost of tuition,” said Department of Health Cabinet Secretary Retta Ward, MPH. “In exchange for the stipends, medical and dental students commit to serving two years of service upon completion of their program in a rural, medically underserved area or clinic providing much needed primary care services to New Mexicans.”
Applications must be received by 5 p.m. Aug. 21.
Currently in New Mexico there are close to 200 physician openings around our state according to the 3RNet Healthcare Jobs recruiting website. Applications and more information about the New Mexico Health Service Corps stipend program can be downloaded from the Dept. of Health Primary Care & Rural Health website.
