New Mexico wears orange to honor survivors of gun violence

SANTA FE — New Mexico joins a nationwide campaign to honor all survivors of gun violence by wearing orange this weekend - Wear Orange Weekend (June 2-4) - in conjunction with a push to raise awareness about the impact of gun violence in our local communities throughout June which is Gun Violence Awareness Month.  

In 2021, there were 578 firearm-related deaths across New Mexico and the state ranked third in the nation for age-adjusted firearm mortality rates (2.78 per 100,000). The state also ranked fifth highest in the U.S. for homicides involving firearms and fourth highest for suicide fatalities involving firearms. 

“Gun owners can take simple steps to help prevent gun violence,” said Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Patrick Allen. “Storing firearms unloaded and secured, and storing ammunition in a separate location can greatly reduce the chance of gun violence.” 

The DOH is partnering with New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence to distribute free gun locks. People interested in receiving a gun lock at no charge can call (323) 394-1131 or email info@newmexicanstopreventgunviolence.org. 

“Injuries and deaths due to firearms take a heavy toll on those affected as well as their communities, throughout New Mexico and the nation,” said Miranda Viscoli, Co-President for New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence. “Securing firearms is a proven strategy that reduces gun violence in all of our communities.” 

Tips for gun owners: 

• Always treat a firearm as a loaded weapon; point the firearm’s muzzle away from yourself and others. 
• Store firearms unloaded and secured with effective, child-resistant gun locks in a locked container out of the reach and sight of children.  
• Store ammunition in a locked place that is separate from the firearm.
