Department of Health to emphasize disease awareness

September 30, 2024 - Zoonotic Diseases - Safety

SANTA FE – New Mexicans working in the agricultural world can be vulnerable to such diseases as avian flu and the West Nile Virus, as well as other occupational health risks.

To raise awareness about this issue, the New Mexico Department of Health (NMHealth) will hold an informational session for farm workers in the Hatch community from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, October 4.

“Engaging farm workers in discussions about avian influenza and West Nile virus is essential for protecting their health, preventing disease spread, ensuring animal welfare and maintaining the economic viability of farming operations,” said Edith Sandoval, Zoonotic Disease Epidemiologist for NMHealth. “It’s a proactive step towards fostering a safer and healthier agricultural environment.”

This educational event is critically important to the health and safety of farm workers, who often face unique risks due to the nature of their work. By raising awareness and providing vital information on disease prevention, NMHealth aims to reduce these risks and improve the overall health of those working in New Mexico’s agricultural sector. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about disease prevention strategies, what symptoms to watch for, and what resources are available to help protect their health.

In addition to the educational session, NMHealth will be present at the Hatch Fall Festival and Resource Fair from 4 to 6 p.m. that same day. Fairgoers can visit the NMHealth table to receive health-related resources, educational materials, and ask questions about disease prevention, wellness programs, and other services.

The informational presentation will take place at Malenas Harvest, LLC, 519 Adams Street, in Hatch, while the Hatch Fall Festival and Resource Fair will take place at the Hatch Community Center, 837 W. Hall St.

This initiative is part of NMHealth’s ongoing efforts to support the health and well-being of farm worker communities in rural New Mexico. Farm workers are essential to the state’s agricultural economy, and ensuring their health is crucial to maintaining strong and resilient communities.
