NMDOH Announces New Ad to Reduce Opioid Misuse, Addiction, and Death

NMDOH Announces New Ad to Reduce Opioid  Misuse, Addiction, and Death

The New Mexico Department of Health announced today a new television ad furthering its commitment to reduce opioid misuse, addiction, and overdose deaths in New Mexico. The new ad features New Mexicans who share their real-life stories about how they have been affected by opioid misuse and its widespread impacts on New Mexico’s communities. As a part of the Department’s “There Is Another Way” campaign, the ad builds on the new video series focusing on the state’s fight against opioid abuse announced earlier this month.

“It is important for the community to hear from New Mexicans who have been impacted first-hand from opioid abuse and misuse. Sharing these stories could save lives by highlighting just how dangerous opioid use and misuse can be and spreading the word that there are alternatives,” said NMDOH Secretary Kathy Kunkel.

In the ad, the viewer will hear from mothers who have lost children to addiction, a person in recovery, and someone who has dedicated their life to help treat those with addiction. The story illustrates how opioid addiction impacts the family and has made its way into communities across the state regardless of social status, job, or location. The ad can be viewed here.

“As we know, opioid addiction can affect anyone. It is grabbing hold of our communities and affecting generations of New Mexicans,” said Kunkel. “If someone you know is abusing opioids encourage them to get help. It’s going to take everyone, as a community, to solve the problem and save lives.”

New Mexico’s drug overdose death rate ranked 17th in the nation with 24.8 deaths per 100,000 residents.

The “There Is Another Way” campaign is a statewide, multifaceted campaign primarily focused on creating a new generation of well-informed patients and caregivers who are educated about safer pain management options and alternative pain management strategies. There Is Another Way provides comprehensive information on non-opioid alternatives, addiction resources and prescription opioid misuse.
