NMBHI Receives Joint Commission Accreditation

The Behavioral Health Institute (NMBHI) announced today it has gone through its triennial voluntary accreditation and certification survey and received the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Hospital, Nursing Care, Behavioral Health and Laboratory Accreditation from The Joint Commission. The New Mexico Department of Health runs NMBHI, often referred to as the state hospital. It is the only state psychiatric hospital in New Mexico.

Photo of the location.“Providing the highest quality care to our patients, clients and residents is our number one priority,” said Executive Director of NMBHI Troy D. Jones, Psy.D.

“Achieving accreditation requires hard work and collaboration among employees. I want to recognize all the dedicated staff members who work so tirelessly to provide quality care to our patients.”

In addition to the psychiatric hospital, the facility also operates a Nursing Home, Adolescent Residential Center, Forensic Division and an outpatient Community Mental Health Center. There was a rigorous unannounced site survey, which evaluated compliance in several areas including environment of care, infection prevention and control, and leadership.

In 2014, NMBHI served 1,142 in-patients and there were 39,600 out-patient visits.

The hospital was established in 1889, and currently employees about 800 workers.
