Promoting Healthy Living at the Fair
The New Mexico Department of Health, New Mexico Aging and Long Term Services Department, and the New Mexico Healthy Aging Collaborative are working together to promote healthy living seniors.
The state and local agencies are hosting their 4th annual Senior Celebration Day at the New Mexico State Fair on Monday, September 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission to the Fair will be $1 on September 14.
“New Mexico’s aging population is growing rapidly. By 2030, New Mexico will rank 3 in the nation in percentage of population ages 60 and older; currently it ranks 10,” said New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department Secretary Designate Myles Copeland. “I encourage New Mexico seniors and their families to go out to the Fair for Senior Celebration Day. We all need to stay active as we age, and this day is a great recognition of that.”
As New Mexico’s population ages, there are opportunities to help the 60 and older population develop healthy habits.
“Connecting older adults to vital community resources and services that can help them stay healthy and independent is important,” said Department of Health Cabinet Secretary Retta Ward, MPH. “We are happy to be partnering with the New Mexico Healthy Aging Collaborative and Aging and Long-Term Services Department for this event.”
There will be booths available on Main Street providing information on programs and services for seniors and many other activities throughout the day, including a “Walk 4 Fitness” fun parade. The walk will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Red Barn and end at the Main Stage Pavilion.
