Otero WIC Program Celebrates World Breastfeeding Week
The New Mexico Department of Health’s Otero County Women, Infants, Children program (WIC) and the Otero County Chapter of the New Mexico Breastfeeding Task Force will host its annual Big Latch Breastfeeding Week Awareness Walk on Friday, August 3, 2018 @ 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM to begin at the Otero Public Health Office, which is located at 1207 8th Street in Alamogordo, and then commencing at the Alamogordo Public Library shortly thereafter.
The Big Latch Breastfeeding Awareness Event aims to strengthen local support for breastfeeding and to improve the health of children and women in the community. It is one of many similar events that take place annually during World Breastfeeding Week (August 1st – 7th). There will be food, door prizes and family-friendly activities.
“Breastfeeding is the best food you can give your baby,” said Department of Health Secretary Lynn Gallagher. “Our Breastfeeding Week events educate New Mexico families of all the ways breastfeeding protects, promotes and supports the health of our children.”
WIC services approximately 1300 families in Otero County per month.
WIC is the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). It is a federal program administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Nutrition Service, and the New Mexico Department of Health, Public Health Division.
