The clearest demonstration of success in the fight against HIVAIDS has been the reduction of mortality since 1996, when highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) was introduced. HAART has increased the time of progression to AIDS, decreased AIDS-related deaths, and improved survival among persons with AIDS throughout the U.S. and in other parts of the world where it is available.
