These patients are referred to as having “definitive care patient records”. The only exception is that patients who are transferred to out of state trauma centers are included in this report as well, as these patients may not otherwise be included in the data set. In the seven year period from 2005 until 2011, there were 32,289 of these definitive care records.

Health care-associated infections, or HAIs, are infections that people acquire while they are receiving treatment for another condition in a health care setting. HAIs can be acquired anywhere health care is delivered, including inpatient acute care hospitals, outpatient settings such as ambulatory surgical centers and end-stage renal disease facilities, and long-term care facilities such as nursing homes and rehabilitation centers. HAIs may be caused by any infectious agent, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, as well as other less common types of pathogens.

At the request of the HHS, the IOM formed a committee in 2009, which developed guidance that health officials could use to establish and implement standards of care during disasters. In its first report, the committee defined “crisis standards of care” (CSC) as a state of being that indicates a substantial change in health care operations and the level of care that can be delivered in a public health emergency, justified by specific circumstances.

Healthcare-associated infections are recognized as a complication of modern medicine and a source of significant morbidity and mortality among hospitalized individuals. Among the HAIs, Clostridium difficile infection incidence has increased markedly in the past decade and now has become the most common HAI pathogen. Furthermore, Clostridium difficile contributes to health care costs with a recent source estimated the attributable cost to be $3427 to $9960 per episode for acute care hospitals.

The health insurance exchange in New Mexico, BeWellNM, provides the opportunity for enrollment in a health insurance plan. People getting medical care can catch serious infections called health care-associated infections. While most types of are declining, one – caused by the germ C. difficile – remains at historically high levels. C. difficile causes diarrhea linked to 14,000 American deaths each year. Those most at risk are people, especially older adults, who take antibiotics and also get medical care. When a person takes antibiotics, good germs that protect against infection are destroyed for several months. During this time, patients can get sick from C. difficile picked up from contaminated surfaces or spread from a health care provider’s hands.

Of the nearly one in 10 New Mexicans who have asthma, more than a third of children and nearly half of adults have the disease under poor control, according to a new state Department of Health report. The chronic lung disease causes some 7,700 emergency room visits and 1,800 hospitalizations a year in New Mexico, ringing up an estimated $30 million a year in hospital charges, the report found.
