The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services regulates all laboratory testing (except research) performed on humans in the U.S. through the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments. In total, CLIA covers approximately 254,000 laboratory entities. The Division of Laboratory Services, within the Survey and Certification Group, under the Center for Clinical Standards and Quality has the responsibility for implementing the CLIA Program. |

The Social Security Act mandates the establishment of minimum health and safety and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act standards that must be met by providers and suppliers participating in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. The Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services has designated Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to administer the standards compliance aspects of these programs. |
