Healthy Kids Las Cruces

An initiative of the New Mexico Department of Health and local partners, Healthy Kids Las Cruces (HKLC) creates collaborative efforts to empower Las Cruces children, youth, and families to adopt eating and physical activity behaviors that support health lifestyles. It is the pioneer model from which the Healthy Kids New Mexico program was established.

Through locally coordinating efforts, HKLC brings together key stakeholders from education, food system, health care, built environment along with overall communities and families to guide decisions, programming, funding and policy that will have a sustainable effect in creating environments that support health lifestyles for all of Las Cruces.

Our hope is to establish a community where healthy behaviors are supported and learned early in life as norms within the entire family in order to reduce the burdens of obesity and chronic disease occurring within our population.

Teachers, parents, community leaders and policymakers will find information, resources and activities here to help New Mexico’s children grow up healthy. Visit us for updates.

Walking School Buses/Bike Trains and International Walk to School Day

Image

Walking and bicycling to school enables children to incorporate the regular physical activity they need each day while also forming healthy habits that can last a lifetime. Walking and biking programs increase safety by reducing traffic around schools as well as by teaching kids good pedestrian and bicycle safety skills. The sense of community also builds as children and parents develop walking and bicycling buddies and chat with neighbors on the sidewalk or path.

Please see the Walking School Buses/Bike Trains and International Walk to School Day document for more details, including a calendar of events.
