CHW Training

Training is an integral part of building the Community Health Workers/Representatives (CHW/Rs) workforce in New Mexico. Training allows CHW/Rs to be better prepared in working with our communities by connecting members to resources that address social drivers of health, provides current information as it relates to public health trends, and allows training opportunities to maintain state CHW certification. Our goal is to utilize Customer Centered Use of Technology by offering trainings in-person and/or online to expand our reach to rural and frontier lands within New Mexico.

Endorsed Core Competency (CC) Community Health Worker (CHW) Training Programs to support state CHW certification:

Provides in-person or online asynchronous training opportunities in English or Spanish and whether you're a seasoned Community Health Worker (CHW), new to the field, or considering a career in community health work, our free CHW Core Competency training is available in New Mexico for interested individuals. Successfully completing coursework and specialty training opportunities moves you one step closer toward earning a Certificate of Core Competency Completion required for state CHW certification and becoming a recognized, certified Community Health Worker (CCHW). Recipients get connected with health and social systems of care, that contribute to your community's quality of life.

Other additional partnerships, organizations, and agencies:

  • Partnership with Aging & Long-Term Services Department (ALTSD), Senior Community Service Employment Program to design and deploy the Older Adult Community Health Worker (CHW) Project – older adults (55+) are recruited and trained as CHWs to address the social and health needs of older adults statewide.
  • Partnership with Department of Workforce Solutions (DWS), Navigator Program to allow Community Health Workers (CHW) to serve as navigators to connect community members in support of economic sustainability and addressing social determinants of health.
  • Partnership with Human Services Department (HSD), Behavioral Health Services Division (BHSD), to design and deploy a mental/behavioral health specialty track for Community Health Workers (CHW), Peer Support Workers (PSW), and other health professionals utilizing the Comprehensive Community Support Services model in support of CHW re/certification and Medicaid reimbursement billing.
  • Partnership with Human Services Department (HSD), Chief Medical Officer for development and deployment of State Plan Amendment (SPA) and Supplement for medical and non-covered medical services (transportation, translation, childcare, etc) in support of the NM Medicaid reimbursement model for Community Health Workers (CHWs) allowing medical and non-covered billing services.
  • Partnership with the New Mexico & Southern Colorado Community Health Representative (CHR) Association in support of upskilling opportunities for CHRs through endorsement of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) training hours required for state Community Health Workers (CHW) certification and recertification.
  • Partnership with New Mexico Southern Promotora Committee (SNMPC) in support of upskilling opportunities for CHWs through endorsement of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) training hours required for state Community Health Workers (CHW) certification and recertification.
