Pay for an abortion

The cost for an abortion depends on how far along you are in your pregnancy. Medication abortions have the lowest cost. Procedural abortion has a higher cost the further along you are in your pregnancy. Check out Information About Abortion to learn more about the different types of abortion.

NM Medicaid

  • NM Medicaid covers abortion. If you do not have Medicaid before becoming pregnant, you may be able to get pregnancy-related Medicaid which covers abortion – click here for more information.

Private Insurance

  • If you have private insurance through your job or the exchange you should check with your plan to see if they pay for abortion.
  • If you use private insurance, they are required by law to send out an Explanation of Benefits. This will be sent to your home in the mail. If a partner, friend, or family member opens this they will be able to see that you had an abortion.

Sometimes it is helpful to talk to others who have had to make choices about abortion.

Doulas can help give emotional and practical support for an abortion.
