Governor Martinez Announces Statewide Vaccination Program for Kids

August 1, 2016 - Immunization - Vaccination

Vaccines Available for Little or no Cost for Children Before School Year Starts

Today, Governor Susana Martinez announced this year’s statewide program to help parents get vaccines for their kids at little or no cost before the school year starts. The program, “Got Shots? Protect Tots!” will run from July 30 to Aug. 13 and increases access to vaccines at more than 60 providers for New Mexicans.

“As we approach the start of new school year, parents need to make it a priority to ensure their children are up-to-date on their vaccines so that they can return to the classroom healthy, strong and ready to learn,” said Governor Martinez.  “The program makes it easier for our kids to get immunized against dangerous and preventable diseases.”

In addition to some Saturday clinics, some providers will offer vaccinations during lunch hours and after 5 p.m. Participants should bring a copy of insurance or Medicaid cards, if available. However, if insurance or Medicaid is not available, vaccines will be free at all Public Health Clinics or provided at a low cost at participating private clinics.

To find a local participating clinic, see the Immunization section of our website or call (866) 681-5872. Parents are encouraged to check with their child’s doctor to find out which vaccines they need this year. During last year’s program, more than 2,200 children were vaccinated, with 5,600 total vaccines administered.

Last year, Governor Martinez signed legislation earlier this year that shores up funding for a statewide program that provides vaccines for children against life-threatening diseases.

Partners in the program include the New Mexico Primary Care Association and the New Mexico Immunization Coalition, and managed care organizations including Molina, United Healthcare, Presbyterian, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico.
