New public health office opens in Roswell
A new $7.9 million public health office opens Friday in Roswell, giving Chaves County residents a larger, modern space for family and children's medical services, vaccinations, vital records, and other essential services.
The public is invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new facility starting at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14 at the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) Chaves County Public Health Office at 1601 S. Garden Avenue in Roswell.
“Public Health is about serving people where they are,” said Jimmy Masters, the southeast regional health director for NMDOH. “This new building reflects the shared commitment of Chaves County and the Department of Health to help local residents raise healthy families and improve the well-being of those we serve.”
“It is an honor to provide Chaves County and the New Mexico Department of Health this new Public Health Office facility,” said Bill Williams, Chaves County Manager. “In recognition of their extraordinary efforts and their ongoing commitment, the Chaves County Board of Commissioners enthusiastically resolved to provide this facility to serve the health needs of our county residents for decades to come.”
NMDOH will gradually transition services from its present location at 200 East Chisum Street with the expectation of providing full services in the new 12,086 square foot facility by early September.
The Chaves County Public Health Office will offer services ranging from family planning and WIC to Harm Reduction and Children’s Medical Services and vaccinations and will employ 31 people. Birth and death certificates will also be available on site through the state Vital Records office.
The funding for the $7.9 million project came from both state and county funds and replaces the old public health building occupied by NMDOH since 1977.
