WIC Program celebrates World Breastfeeding Week
SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Health’s Women, Infants, Children program (WIC) and the New Mexico Breastfeeding Task Force will host World Breastfeeding Week Events at all statewide WIC locations.
World Breastfeeding Week aims to strengthen local support for breastfeeding and to improve the health of children and women in the community. It is one of many similar events that take place annually during World Breastfeeding Week (August 1st – 7th). This year, countries around the world will be celebrate the international theme, “Closing the Gap.” S
"Breastfeeding has many health benefits," said Dr. Miranda Durham, Chief Medical Officer of the New Mexico Department of Health. "As WIC celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, we want to recognize the pivotal role WIC plays in supporting parents and young children. The WIC program is essential to our goal of making New Mexico the healthiest state in the nation by 2040."
WIC services approximately 430,200 families in New Mexico per year.
WIC is the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). It is a federal program administered by the United States Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service, and the New Mexico Department of Health, Public Health Division.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has issued a proclamation commemorating Breastfeeding Month statewide.
