Keep your kids’ teeth healthy
SANTA FE — Throughout February, the New Mexico Department of Health’s (NMDOH) Office of Oral Health Program is raising awareness about the importance of starting healthy dental habits at an early age.
“Healthy teeth are essential to a child’s overall well-being and success in life” said Leisha D. Ortiz, Interim Director of the NMDOH Office of Oral Health. “As we celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month, we want to remind families that dental health outcomes are mainly determined by daily habits. Regular dental visits and healthy habits that begin early in life help to prevent cavities and set the foundation for a lifetime of oral health.”
NMDOH emphasizes that proper dental care, mindful nutrition choices, and active parental involvement are essential for maintaining children's oral health. Families can protect their children's smiles through simple yet effective daily practices:
- Brushing and Flossing: Children should brush their teeth at least twice a day. Daily flossing is important, particularly when there is not much space between teeth (when adult teeth start to appear).
- Healthy Eating Habits: Limit sugar in food and drinks. Encourage a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and ensure children drink water, especially between meals. Frequent exposure to sugary drinks increases the risk of developing cavities.
- Regular Dental Visits: Regular check-ups (at least every six months) with a dental provider starting by age 1 ensure that any potential issues are identified early to reduce treatment needs and risk for serious infection.
Through February, the Office of Oral Health will engage with schools and community groups across New Mexico to provide educational resources, screenings, fluoride varnish and dental sealants.
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared February 2025 as “Children’s Dental Health Month” in New Mexico.
