State announces more flexible storage, shipping options for Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine

Santa Fe--The New Mexico Department of Health (DOH) on Monday announced that the federal government has modified the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine Emergency Use Authorization. Now, thawed, undiluted vials of Pfizer vaccine may be stored for up to one month in refrigerators. Previously, thawed, undiluted vaccine vials could be stored in refrigerators for a maximum of five days.

“DOH is pleased that the FDA’s decision will mean more flexible storage for health care providers - making it even easier for New Mexicans to access COVID-19 vaccine,” said DOH Cabinet Secretary Dr. Tracie Collins. 

In addition, smaller packages of Pfizer vaccine will soon be available, which will give the state more flexible options for distribution to primary care providers and other smaller COVID-19 vaccine providers. 

Health care providers interested in helping to administer vaccine can enroll via the DOH Vaccine Provider Portal.
