Northeastern New Mexico preps for cold weather
SANTA FE – The National Weather Service forecasts a winter wave of cold weather to hit the northeastern part of the state, and the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) urges residents to prepare for potential health and safety risks.
Weather Forecast Highlights:
Cold Weather Advisory from 6 p.m. this evening to 8 a.m. Friday:
- Affected areas: Northeast New Mexico, including Clayton and Raton.
- Wind chills forecast as low as -15°F, increasing the risk of hypothermia and frostbite.
Winter Storm Watch:
- Affected Areas: Tusas, Chuskas, Jemez, and Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
- Heavy snowfall and strong winds leading to hazardous travel conditions, potential road closures, and low visibility due to blowing snow.
The NMDOH Center for Health Protection suggests:
Protect People and Pets:
- Dress in heavy layers and use wool or waterproof gear if possible.
- Watch for cold-related symptoms like shivering, numbness or confusion. Seek help if needed.
- People most vulnerable to extreme cold are infants, the elderly, persons with chronic illness, outdoor workers, and the unhoused.
- Bring your pets indoors and make sure that they have warm bedding.
Prepare Homes and Vehicles:
- Safely heat your home and check smoke/carbon monoxide detectors.
- Keep emergency supplies and blankets in your vehicle if traveling.
