Since gay men opened the pages of the July 3, 1981, New York Times and read the headline, “Rare Cancer Seen in 41 Homosexuals,” gay and bisexual men and male-to-female transgenders have been disproportionally affected and stigmatized because of high rates of a then mysterious syndrome, now known as AIDS caused by HIV, but first called Gay Related Immune Deficiency.
