Carbon monoxide is a highly toxic gas. You cannot see, smell, or taste it. It is produced and released whenever fuel or other materials are burned. The use of alternative sources of fuel or electricity for heating, cooling, or cooking can cause carbon monoxide to build up in a home, garage, or camper. Carbon monoxide is found in fumes given off by fuel burners. Those can be small gasoline engines, stoves, generators, lanterns, and gas ranges or by burning charcoal and wood.
