Tri-County Summer Farmers Market Returns Saturday Location in Historic Old Town Plaza Park Fresh local produce and unique crafts from San Miguel, Mora and Guadalupe counties will once again be sold directly by growers and artisans when the summer season of the Farmers Market launches on Saturday, May 31st. Hours of operation will be 7 am until noon. A sample of the products to be offered at the market are in-season, nutritionally dense fruits and vegetables that are sustainably produced, jams and jellies made from homegrown berries, artisan breads and desserts, farm-fresh eggs, a variety of greens and chilies. Crafts include handmade soaps, infused oils, salves, jewelry, and various art. The difference this year is the Saturday market will be held in The Old Town Plaza Park. Acting in tandem with the City of Las Vegas, board members of the market worked over the winter to find a new Saturday location for the summer season. One that would be convenient and beneficial for market vendors and their customers. City officials offered The Plaza location which the market enthusiastically accepted. “The City, surrounding businesses and market vendors are all very excited about the new location.” says Roxane Despain, President of the Farmers Market Board of Directors. “This is a great opportunity for the community to support local agriculture, which is such an important part of our economy. At the same time the market provides a means of boosting tourism dollars. Not only for the vendors but for The Plaza and Bridge Street merchants as well.” During the summer market, cooking demonstrations featuring local chefs using ingredients found at the market will be held at the gazebo. There will also be children’s activities, sustainable farming presentations and other market related special events held there until the season ends in November. In recent years the market has been held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the corner of University and Sixth streets. The Wednesday market will continue at this location throughout the summer, from 7 am until sellout. About the Tri-County Farmers Market: The market provides farmers the economic advantage that comes with selling their locally grown produce directly to consumers. Thus increasing the sustainable food supply and viability of Northern New Mexico farmers; while striving to maintain the quality of the regional environment. Another important benefit of the farmers market is the wide variety of healthy, affordable, seasonal food made easily accessible to area residents. Particularly reaching a demographic that may not otherwise have such access. Including food items that relate to the cultural identity of the community.
