School Starts Soon – Get Vaccinated

July 26, 2018 - Cabinet Secretary - Blog

Our kids in New Mexico may still happily be in denial, but it’s true: in just a few short weeks, it’s back to school. That means school-aged children from pre-school to high school need to be fully vaccinated before school starts.

Making sure children in our state get all their vaccinations on time is one of the most important things we do in public health to ensure children’s long-term health – and not just their health, but the health of their friends, classmates, and our communities.

The New Mexico Department of Health, the New Mexico Primary Care Association and the New Mexico Immunization Coalition are working together in making sure all New Mexico children are immunized on time.

New Mexico public health offices are offering no cost back-to-school vaccinations.  You only need to bring a copy of the child’s shot record and current insurance card, including Medicaid. Please check out our Shot Clinics section on the NMDOH homepage for dates and times of event near you.

Vaccinations vary by age – so be sure to visit our Immunization page to find out what vaccines your child needs this school year. There you’ll find a link for easy to read immunization schedules for children of all ages from newborn to age 18.

I want to thank all the moms and dads for vaccinating their children. Doing so protects our youth from dangerous and preventable diseases, and gets our kiddos back in the classroom this August healthy, strong and ready to learn.
