Health Prevention Programs
The Health Department has a myriad of initiatives and programs that attempt to prevent health problems from occurring in the first place. The forward thinking strategy is key to keeping the population of New Mexico healthy in the twenty-first century.

- Antibiotics - promoting the proper use of antibiotics
Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program - improving access to high-quality breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services for women who are underserved, and to increasing public awareness through education about prevention, disease processes and the importance of annual well-woman exams for early detection- Comprehensive Cancer Program - focuses on colorectal, lung, skin and prostate cancer education and awareness activities; cancer survivor support and education services; and cancer patient housing.
- Diabetes Prevention & Control Program - "Diabetes: Prevent it. Delay it. Or lessen its effects"
- Handwashing - "Keeping Kids Healthy" with a School-based hand hygiene program
- Harm Reduction Program - works to reduce drug-related harm while enhancing individual, family, and community wellness, primarily through the provision of linguistically appropriate and culturally competent services to injection drug users (IDU)
- Hepatitis C Prevention - actively engaged in several activities to increase the awareness and prevention of viral hepatitis among high-risk populations
- HIV Prevention Program - works to reduce HIV transmission by planning, funding, coordinating and evaluating evidence-based HIV prevention interventions for at-risk populations across New Mexico
- Injury Prevention - promotes evidence-based prevention strategies and promising practices, coalition building, and offering technical assistance to community members working on injury prevention education and policy
- Immunization Program of New Mexico - sponsors immunization clinics for children statewide
- Obesity Data in New Mexico - supports creation of environments (work sites, schools, healthcare settings, & communities) that encourage and facilitate healthful nutrition and physical activity choices and behaviors
- Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Program (TUPAC) - strongly discourages the use of tobacco among youth and adults
- Tumor Registry (UNM)- Collaborating with the medical, research and public communities to control the spread of cancer since 1967
- Tuberculosis Prevention and Control - serves people infected with TB, contacts of active TB cases, public and private healthcare providers throughout NM, and the general public.
- Refugee Health Program - provides newly arrived refugees with a health screening to serve as an entry point into the U.S. health system, prevent the transmission of communicable disease to the public, and ensure follow-up for conditions that could affect their well-being or impede their ability to effectively resettle.
- STD Prevention Program - conducts case surveillance, case management, and partner notification for reportable STDs in the state

- Suicide Prevention - links to New Mexico Suicide and Crisis Hotlines
- Worksite Health Program – Encourages New Mexico businesses, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies to adopt new worksite wellness programs that are designed to prevent, detect, and reduce modifiable risk factors for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, lower respiratory diseases, and arthritis. The risk factors include smoking, inadequate physical activity, poor nutrition, obesity, overweight, high blood pressure, and high blood cholesterol.
