Department of Health Breaks Ground on New Alzheimer’s Facility

July 21, 2015 - Public Relations - Celebration

Today, the New Mexico Department of Health broke ground on a new $23 million facility for state veterans in need of long-term Alzheimer’s and skilled nursing care at the New Mexico State Veterans’ Home in Truth or Consequences, NM.

The new facility will add 87,431 square feet to the Veterans’ Home and about 60 beds.  About 40 of the beds will be for Alzheimer’s patients and the others will be for patients requiring skilled nursing.

“The Department of Health is taking the lead in providing care for those who have served our state and our country for decades,” said Cabinet Secretary Retta Ward, MPH. “This additional facility will allow our veterans to live their final years as independently as possible.”

An estimated 34,000 New Mexicans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, which consistently ranks as one of the top 10 leading causes of death in the state.

“The New Mexico State Veterans’ Home staff are so very proud to be celebrating this groundbreaking with our residents today.   This new building will not only be a great asset to T. or C., but to the state of New Mexico as well,” said Lori Montgomery, Administrator.“I am so proud of the hard work that went into this design and the accomplishments of all of the staff to make this a reality.”

Sixty-five percent of construction costs will be paid for with a grant from the United States Department of Veteran’s Affairs, with the rest paid for by the New Mexico State Legislature. Construction is expected to be complete in the summer of 2017.

The New Mexico Veterans’ Home is currently home to about 125 residents.
