Newborn Screening Program

New Mexico Newborn Screening Program (NMNBSP) requires that all babies born in New Mexico receive screening for certain genetic, metabolic, hemoglobin and endocrine disorders. The New Mexico Newborn Screening Program offers screening for 27 disorders. The NMNBSP provides services to over 28,000 babies and their families annually. Currently the State of New Mexico mandates two newborn screens be collected on every newborn born in NM.

New Mexico Newborn Screening Program continues to partner with Mountain States Genetic Network and has also contracted with Oregon State Public Health Laboratory for expanded screening.

Babies with these conditions appear normal at birth. It is only with time that the conditions affects the baby’s brain or physical development or causes other medical problems. NOTE: The State of New Mexico mandates two tests.

• Parents need to be rigorously instructed on the importance of taking the second bloodspot form with them to their newborns first newborn appointment or lab visit.

Double Kits $ 89.00

• Double kits are 2-part filter paper bloodspot forms.
• The forms are bar coded in order to link the first form with the second form.
• Second bloodspot form is not to be used as a first bloodspot for another client.
• Parents need to be rigorously instructed on the importance of bringing the second bloodspot form with them to their first newborns appointment or lab visit.

Single Kits $25.00

• Single kits are provided free when Oregon State Public Health Laboratory requests another sample.
• Single kits may be used when the form is lost or when parents forget to bring it for their first pediatric or lab appointment. The lab or physician will have to purchase single kit bloodspot forms for $25.00 each. In the event a second form is not available for the second screen, in order to ensure a child receives testing, the family may be referred to the Public Health Nurse at the local State Public Health Office. • Children’s Medical Services (CMS) Newborn Screening program provides programmatic follow-up of all children diagnosed on newborn screening to age 21.
• Children’s Medical Services (CMS) provides clinical long-term follow-up for children that have been identified with a genetic/metabolic, endocrine, and hemoglobin disorder. Children are followed to the age of 21.
• CMS has almost 60 medical social workers and they are housed in 32 health offices throughout the state. Medical Social Workers and Family Infant Toddler Social workers provide service coordination for children and youth with special health care needs.
• CMS has 2 Registered Nurses in the Newborn Screening Program
• New Mexico Newborn Screening Program has an established relationship with the UNM Department of Pediatrics at the UNM Health Science Center/Children’s Hospital
• CMS has an Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program and provides some adult metabolic disease services

All birthing hospitals in New Mexico are required to screen newborns for hearing loss prior to discharge from the hospital. The Department of Health's Children's Medical Services assists families in accessing needed services when their infants require follow-up on their screening.
