HIV/AIDS Treatment and Services
The goal of the HIV Services Program is to support primary medical care and essential support services to persons living with HIV/ AIDS. The two major sources of funding for the program are the Federal Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (Part B and ADAP) and State General Funds. The Ryan White Part B Program works with cities, states, and local community-based organizations to provide HIV-related services to more than half a million people across the United States each year. The program is for those who do not have sufficient health care coverage or financial resources for coping with HIV disease. Ryan White fills gaps in care not covered by other sources.
In New Mexico, the combined funding for the program is used for a combination of core medical services and support services. This primarily includes outpatient and ambulatory health services; the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP); oral health care; health insurance premium and cost-sharing assistance; medical and non-medical case management; mental health services; emergency financial assistance; food vouchers; medical transportation, and housing assistance. In addition, staff with the HIV Services Program work to promote professional development of providers performing HIV medical and case management care and work on projects related to clinical quality management.
The program contracts with community-based organizations (clinical and social services) as well as providing services through a Public Health Office in the southwestern portion of the state. This system of care ensures that persons living with HIV/ AIDS in both urban and rural parts of the state have access to care and services.
