We did a crazy thing we did last Friday. BTI staffers Steinar, Kristopher and Bill worked with volunteers from the NM National Guard, Free Bikes 4 Kidz NM, and the NM Department of Health to build 200 bikes for children in the state foster care system – in just 8 hours. Massive kudos to Kristopher and Steiner, who were the day’s lead mechanics and instructors. They patiently mentored volunteers through all the finer points of bike assembly. By the end of the afternoon we may have even created a few new cycling enthusiasts. We’re super proud of how this effort turned out and to have the opportunity to work with New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan-Grisham’s staff on this ambitious project to get more kids riding bikes!

    • text: What we know. Cases of bird flu exploded among wild migratory birds in the past two years, often causing outbreaks on poultry farms. The recent discovery of the virus in cows in dairy farms and a dairy farm employee—the second person in the U.S. ever documented to be infected with H5N1—is a red flag for experts.
    • United States map graphic with specific states highlighted with text: Which states have found bird flu in dairy cows? The strain of bird flu that has killed millions of wild birds in recent years has been found in at least 26 dairy herds in eight U.S. states: Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas and
South Dakota
    • graphic of milk carton with text: If H5N1 is in cows, is milk safe? Milk is safe if you consume pasteurized milk from a commercial dairy processor. Experts advise against consuming raw milk products because there are other risks—not just avian influenza.
    • text: What about eggs and meat? The likelihood that eggs from infected poultry are found in the retail market is low and proper storage and preparation further reduce the risk. Beef cattle are not involved in this outbreak; however, it is still recommended to cook beef to a safe internal temperature.
